23 December 2019, Preparing for Christmas and Thinking About Next Year

Today was more of a prep for Christmas than anything else.  Finished up Christmas shopping.  This year I decided to make molasses cookies.  So I ran around buying stuff to make the cookies.  I had a little help from my cousin’s daughter making them.  The cookie dough is now in the fridge, in which I will bake them tomorrow.  Fingers crossed they will come out okay.  I never really baked cookies before.
Today was also the day that she got a puppy, a labradoodle.  In time I will get a puppy, like when I start making money from my writing and photography.  I will get a French Bulldog, which will cost just a bit more and the dog will have a shorter lifespan.  What I should get is an Italian Greyhound or a whippet so that it will go on walks with me around the lake.
So I didn’t sit down and plan next year, like the stuff I would like to do.  I’m not sure if I want to go to Minneapolis for the Doctor Who convention January 17-19.  I’m not a big fan of interstate driving during the winter.  After that, I’m not sure what I want to do this year.  Do I want to go to Boston for my birthday.  Do I want to go to Vancouver, BC to hike the Capilano Suspension Bridge?  It costs roughly $133 USD for a four hour tour.  If you ever seen the pictures of the bridge, I would say that is totally worth it.  Do I want to go to a Red Sox game, if so, which city.  Although Boston on my birthday and Red Sox game, would be awesome.
So the main idea is how many novellas can I finish in a year.  In discussions I had with other writers, on average an author would need to self-publish four books a year to actually reach success.  Romance writers do that easily.
I bought How to Write a Novella in 24 Hours by Andrew Mayne.  Is it worth the $3.99 that I paid for it.  Probably not, as it was around 2000 words long.  But then I will buy a writer’s guide book if it can do just one thing, give me one new piece of information.  This one may have given me two and possibly more.  One idea I got from the book is the two sentence story idea, sit down and write as many two sentence story ideas.  So I am reading this and the author’s blog book that I mentioned before.
I have so many story ideas, I need to work on them.  I will use the imitation idea to write a couple of novellas so that I get a good idea how to write with a lesser need for critique, I’ll still use beta readers.  A few years ago, I had this idea of copying Marvel and write a novella for each hero or heroine.  Then there would be a novel tying all the heros together.  I even thought of getting other writers to contribute.  It was just an idea, but maybe I can still work on that project.  What will make the decision for me is how long it takes for me to write out the next couple projects.  I’m thinking that most of these stories would be perfect at the 120 page set up.

I tried flying my drone today and decided I should read the instructions a bit more try again tomorrow.  Once I master this drone, I’ll put away some money for a spendier drone that has a decent camera.  Then I will work on aerial photography and set up a website to sell prints of the pictures I take with it.  Another idea.  So many ideas to work on.  Should keep me busy next year.  Maybe something will happen while I keep myself overly busy.

More of the Process

This current project will need beta readers.  Beta readers speed up the project.  If you get enough people read it and tell what they really think, then you can use their feedback to help in the next editing process.   Writers groups are good for that as well.  I think that reading short stories at the writer’s group is far more efficient to hone the craft of writing.  If you are looking for feedback on a novel, it would take a long time to finish the project if you are only reading five pages at a time, which is what most writer’s groups do. Most beta readers will read the story in one go and give you feedback afterwards.  I’m not saying either beta readers or writer’s groups are better, one needs to determine what is best for them.  For me, I think beta readers are the way to go for novels and writer’s groups are best for short stories and honing the craft of writing. Short stories are quick and to the point.  Novels take time to build up characters and set up the conflict of the s…

10 January 2020 Sick... and the Need for Personal Messagers

Mood song: The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult and Possum Kinddom by the Toadies.  I’m not sure if they are my actual mood but they are a similar theme to the poem I’m writing.  The former song is about a girl being led to the reaper.  The later is about a girl being lured to Possum Kingdom lake in Texas by a cult member.  I’m not sure about the poem I’m writing as it is somewhat free verse, not my forte as I don’t quite understand poetry in that form.   I can understand my friend’s poetry in free verse as I can see the rhythm in the words and the imagery.  Maybe that is the key to understanding poetry is understanding rhythm and imagery.  The poem that I’m writing is about Persephone.
It’s been a blah kind of day as I’m sick.  If a person looked at me, they probably wouldn’t see that I was sick, well maybe now they would because I’m feeling a bit warm.  Anyway, I went home early and took a nap.  I went to the cigar shop to buy cigars for later.  Then I went to Walmart to get snacks.  It’…

5 December 2019 I Should Be Writing

Today has been a struggle.  A struggle at work, where I work for 9 hours.  And a struggle to stay away when I got home from my walk.  It’s like I drink endless amounts of coffee and still feel like drifting off to sleep.  I told myself that I was going to change and get stuff done tonight.  But when I got home, I wanted to do nothing.  So, I’m writing this blog.  I should set a timer for when I’m viewing social media. I need to start working on a ghost story.  Then after I finish the rough draft of that, start working on editing and rewriting the novella I started this fall.   I want to write a few stories of Milo DeFord aka the Marquis de Avery.  Where he has an argument with his younger friend Glum.  Where he returns six months his time and six years hers back to our earth.  And she is so happy to see him, but he has been to several different worlds and he is too focused on saving the world to note her concern for him. I want to write a story about a hawk nosed girl who is actually…
